Being self employed is AMAZING!
Working from home is OUTSTANDING!
Juggling home life… a relationship… and a job… not always fabulous!
I have a top 3 little list that I stick to, which has helped me through the past 8 years of self employment FROM HOME…
plus stay focused, creative and healthy… and keeps my family from running away, or kicking me out!
Just like the song says… “Working 9-5!“… we need hours too. I think the #1 problem for us work at home people is hours… its hard to keep to a schedule, when there are constant distractions (children, the phone, door bell, pets, etc). Unlike an office job, we don’t leave the house… and along with that come many distractions. I admit, its soooo hard to stay focu……
Yikes, sorry… I do that A LOT!
Anywho, alike any other job… us self employed workers from home, we need to give ourselves working hours, and stick to them!
It’s easy to walk past your desk at home, and want to take a quick peek at your emails or editing files.
BACK OFF SISTER… if it’s before or after your work hours, YOU.HOLD.BACK.
What I have learned, and what I do…. I still suck at this, but I try my best. Here is my daily schedule: 8:45am – 2:30pm. DONE & DONE.
8:45, once my kids are out of the house and to school… I get to work.
And that work keeps going (minus a few breaks) until around 2:30, when it’s time to jump in the truck and pick up the littles from school.
Even so… I have to set an alarm reminder to actually PICK THEM UP FROM SCHOOL, or I will keep pounding the keyboard until the school calls… “Hey there, your kids are here at school still”… whoopsie!
If it’s a holiday… I AM OFF! Kids are home, significant is home (from a regular 9-5 job)… therefore, so am I. I set up an email response, letting people know I will be back on “this date” and I step away…
STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER…
BYE BYE FELICIA…
Everyone else in the working world gets breaks, so why not you?
It’s easy for me to keep pounding my keyboard and never even know that lunch has past. Lemme tell you, that is awesome for the metabolism (ack!).
Your body NEEDS A BREAK… it NEEDS TO BE FED. Plus, you need to get your ass up out of your chair and MOVE!
My favorite reminder… my crazy FitBit. It buzzes me every so often, so I need to remember to move. I get up, walk around… grab a drink, and head back to my desk. Don’t forget to eat also. Hey, if it’s Taco Tuesday... maybe a double lunch break?!
Give yourself break times. Grab the kitchen timer, and set if for a certain amount of time. Give yourself time for emails, editing, BREAK… then maybe social networking, more editing…. BREAK.
In fact, here is a great little object that I have learned about recently… and it’s SUPER HELPFUL!
The Miracle Cube Timer… BOOM… it has easy break downs and times for certain tasks.
Going along with breaks… if you can (this obviously doesn’t apply to wedding photographers), take the weekends off. Spend time with your family, esp if you have young kids in school and the weekend is their time with you. They deserve that…. and so do you.
If you cannot take the weekends off, make sure that you designate a day during the week that IS off for you.
As human beings, especially creative human beings, we need time to regenerate ourselves. A tired creative can be a dull creative… so take time for yourself. Even if it is involves the indulgent of bad tv and some soft pretzels covered in salt!
With that said… I hope some of this helps you be a happier and more successful business owner… partner… and parent.
IT’S HARD MAN… but it’s a glorious and wonderful thing. So take care of YOU… and you will be a happy dancer!
Ps, if you have more to share, and more ideas to add to this small list… SHARE IT IN THE COMMENTS!
We’d love to hear <3
PPS, as I type this… it is now 2:28 and I have exactly 2 minutes until it’s END OF MY WORK DAY! Woot woot!
Something crazy happened this week… something that I never thought of, nor dreamt of.
Gagging… just to think of it again.
A drama unfolded on Facebook yesterday, and it seems… us photographers have been targeted.
Targeted how? By fake profiles “friending” us….
Fake Profiles? Like who, you ask….?
CRAZY PEOPLE, that’s who!
Friend requests coming in that look trustworthy… I mean, from people with “90 mutual friends“… in the photography business. Profiles have nice pictures, look professional… they MUST be business affiliated, right? Why else would they want to friend me?
What harm could come of a simple “friending” on Facebook?
SO MUCH… SO SO SO SO MUCH.
If you are like me, you share & post personal things. Thoughts, vacations… PICTURES… take a millisecond to think about it.
It’s a trap… a scam… and potentially one that can possibly be linked to dark things involving children.
NO THANK YOU…
To be honest… I am infuriated! How the hell do people come up with this?
A scam targeted directly at photographers.
A scam targeted towards children…
Gagging again at the thought of a stranger peeking at my personal life like that… with ill intentions.
My PSA for the time being…. DO NOT FRIEND PEOPLE THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW.
and UNFRIEND PEOPLE THAT ARE ALREADY ON YOUR LIST who you do not know…
Scary thing… that there are people out there that do this stuff. Targeting because of our profession…
because of our own obsession with photographing our darling children and sharing it with people we love…
BARF GAG… I AM PISSED OFF!
Right now… photographers, head to your Facebook, and check your friends list (esp recent friends). If you do NOT know them on a personal or professional way, UNFRIEND. Go ahead and check profiles… and if it seems fishy, DELETE.
Protect your children…
Protect all of your REAL FRIENDS on social media…
Be wary of friend requests… and be SMART.
A lot of these people are hackers out to get your info or your friends info, too. They will make a fake account in your name, block you, and then go in a friend all of your friends which they accept because they think its you. I’ve seen it happen, gotten the friend requests, the random chats, etc. They will then randomly PM your friends to get money from them, stating you’re on a trip and stranded, etc….

When you see a post on social media asking: Know a Photographer who DOESN’T cost an “arm & leg”?
or… “Hi, I want a GREAT photographer who won’t break the bank!”
That line right there, above… is the sure fire way to anger any professional photographer… especially your friends who are photographers.
So listen up… let me help here…. because, all in all… we just want HAPPINESS in this crazy world! Right?
WHAT IS AN AFFORDABLE PHOTOGRAPHER TO YOU?
And what are you expecting of that said “affordable” photographer?
Want to really make yourself sick? Here is a break down on what your “affordable” photographer is making:
Photographer charges $75 for session… they are making anywhere from $-2.50 – $.84 CENTS per hour
(yes, that first number was a negative… they are paying YOU basically.
Photographer charges $150 for session… they are making around $7 per hour… that’s less then minimum wage.
See where I am going with this?
The session and the time shooting your images are NOT the only time spent by your photographer… that session time is only a fraction of the work put into giving our clients the unforgettable images we capture.
that goes into the photography JOB.
WHAT DOES A PHOTOGRAPHER PAY FOR? TRUE COSTS…
- travel to/from session
- shooting time
- culling session
- editing FULL gallery
- uploading gallery
- blogging & social media
- baby sitter (many have their own familes too, ya know)
- gas to drive to location (per session)
- education (workshops/online/mentoring)
- branding & marketing
- website & url upkeep
- equipment cleaning
- permit fee for location
- extra equipment (mem cards, external hard drive, etc)
- studio equipment (backdrops/stand/lights)
- banking/PayPal/credit card fees
- taxes (yearly LLC or Sole P cost)
- props (hats/outfits/stuffers/headbands/etc)
Sick to your stomach yet?
Your “professional” photographer is not just charging you for their time shooting you and your darling brood. They are also paying for their time prior (emailing & phone calls with you)… scouting for locations to shoot you at… paying their legal fees & taxes to be a LEGIT business… oh yeah… BUYING THAT CAMERA & LENS to shoot with. Plus… so much more… SO.MUCH.MORE.
Next time you or someone you know scoffs at a photographer for his/her pricing… share this article with them… and remember… these ARE JOBS too… many of whom work for supporting their family, sole or main income. Food on the table for their babes… rent or mortgage, children in school, etc.
Now go apologize to your photographer friends for underestimating them… because, all in all… we (photographers) do this photography thing because we are people pleasers. WE LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY AND GIVING THIS GIFT TO OTHERS. It makes us happy, and keeps us creatively sane, to do kind things and make artistic pieces for you to enjoy FOREVER.
We, photographers worldwide, are NOT trying to break your bank…. or take you for a ride… and we are definitely not out there trying to give “ho-hum” mediocre images for you to showcase to your friends and family.
WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING… simple as that.
We would not ask you to give a product, time or service for free… so please respect ours as well.
With all our love… PHOTOGRAPHERS WORLDWIDE!
HEY PHOTOGRAPHERS… Wanna learn how to price yourself?
Grab this link >>> THE PRICING MONSTER <<< and snag our super cheap Pricing Formulation Spreadsheet… it’s worth it!
2) What is your FAVORITE Prop in your “stash”? Share a picture(s) as well!
The circle swing! I didn’t plan on it being as popular as it has been when I designed it, but I like that I can do different things with it.
3) And we have to ask, our typical question…… WHAT DO YOU SHOT WITH, and what is your favorite lens?
Canon 5DMk3, and I have just two lenses right now a Sigma 50mm macro for details and a Canon 135L.
4) If you could do one DREAM PHOTOGRAPHY JOB, what would it be?
Maybe a celebrity…
or a dream location…
a family of quints?!
Share with us your photographic DREAM shoot!
Dream job.. I think that would be faeries in the castle ruins and forests of Ireland!
5) Where are you located, in this great wide world?!
6) Give us a random fun fact about yourself. We like to giggle.. so don’t hold back!
I always tell my clients “I’m a 6ft tall redhead, you can’t miss me.” and when I get out of the car they still go “Oh, you’re tall!”
7) If you could have one SUPER POWER… what would it be? And come on… make us giggle!
To fly. Every time. I think I shoot fairies so much because it allows me to live out my desire for wings a little bit.
8) Share with us your ALL TIME #1 FAVORITE image in your portfolio.
This one. This pair of girls is close to my heart and shows exactly who they are.
9) Do you have any photography adventures planned for the future? Workshops, Shoot outs, or fun traveling?
I’ve got a shootout coming up in NOLA this November, and at one in Seattle for 2017!
10) Any fabulous formative info you can “share” with fellow photographers ? Just starting out or seasoned professionals… we could always use inspiration… so we’d love a “pep talk” !
If you compete on price, you will ALWAYS lose.
